Personal Development

Albert Einstein famously said "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value."

At certain milestones in life, we all tend to spend some time reflecting seriously on our lives. It happens at important birthdays, at the start of a new year or following major life events, such as the birth of a baby or the loss of loved one. This type of introspection is good, as it helps us to assess where we've been and where we're headed, and to do some goal setting, as to where we'd like to see ourselves in the next five or ten years.

But what if your latest period of self-reflection has revealed that you want to get more out of life? How can you avoid drifting aimlessly or living life as though you're on a treadmill that you can never step off of?

Whether you're a fan of new methods of self-improvement and development or more of a traditional, keep your nose to the grindstone type of thinker, its important to allow yourself time to assess whether you feel you're living your life to its fullest potential. This doesn't necessarily have anything to do with achieving a certain amount of success in your career, bringing home a specific amount of money or having the latest and greatest in cars or gadgets. While these things all bring with them a certain amount of happiness and satisfaction, it's only by pursuing personal growth and reaching our highest potential of self development that we can find deep, long-lasting contentment.

How can we reach that potential? While bookstores are full of personal development books and courses, it can be hard to choose the one that is best suited to your goal setting strategy. Are you looking to improve your self confidence, to help you feel more assertive in your day to day life? Would you like help with stress management to improve your health and mental well-being? Or perhaps you're mostly concerned with your spiritual development, to help you find answers to important life questions.

NLP, or Neurolinguistic Programming is a method that can help people to change by teaching them how to program their brains and to change the way they think. NLP provides a model of effective communication development. Its goal is to help people to understand the connection between life experiences and the underlying thoughts that we have during such experiences. By educating people to be more self-aware and to communicate well with others, people are able to change their behavior and lead a more productive, more satisfying life. The benefits of NLP are wide-ranging, helping in areas including depression and overcoming phobias.

While the main objective of the NLP system is to help people in therapeutic way, its principles can be applied in many different areas of life, such as, leadership training, business communication, competitive sports and developing life skills.

If you're interested in changing the way you think or changing the way you act, it's important to first understand how the body works in processing information. Our basic mental processes, most of which happen subconsciously, as we solve problems, remember past experiences or communicate with people, are all processes that are based on images or representations formed in our brains. These representations are constantly forming and changing as we go through life. By examining and making the effort to change these representations, we can change the way we think, the way we approach problems and help us to build and maintain rapport when we interact with people. Checking the filters through which we see the world can reveal faulty thinking patterns that may be holding us back or affecting the way we approach new situations.

Once we've changed these underlying thought processes that can often hold us back in life, it becomes much easier to establish a clear direction in life. Having a meaningful purpose motivates us to make things happen instead of sitting back and accepting whatever comes our way. We will have self confidence to try new things, to share our ideas and to learn about ourselves when problems arise.
